Methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) is the common name for the organic compound 4-methylpentan-2-one, condensed chemical formula (CH₃)₂CHCH₂C(O)CH₃. This colourless liquid, a ketone, is used as a solvent for gums, resins, paints, varnishes, lacquers, and nitrocellulose.^[2]

At laboratory scale, MIBK can be produced via a three-step process using acetone as the starting material. Self-condensation, a type of aldol reaction, produces diacetone alcohol,^[3] which readily dehydrates to give 4-methylpent-3-en-2-one (commonly, mesityl oxide).^[4] Mesityl oxide is then hydrogenated to give MIBK.^[5]

Industrially, these three steps are combined. Acetone is treated with a strongly acidic, palladium catalyst-doped cation exchange resin under medium pressure of hydrogen.^[6] Several million kilograms are produced annually.^[5]

Morpholine is an organic chemical compound having the chemical formula O(CH₂CH₂)₂NH. This heterocycle features both amine and ether functional groups. Morpholine is a common additive, in parts per million concentrations, for pH adjustment in both fossil fuel and nuclear power plant steam systems. Morpholine is used because its volatility is about the same as water, so once it is added to the water, its concentration becomes distributed rather evenly in both the water and steam phases. Its pH-adjusting qualities then become distributed throughout the steam plant to provide corrosion protection. Morpholine is often used in conjunction with low concentrations of hydrazine or ammonia to provide a comprehensive all-volatile treatment chemistry for corrosion protection for the steam systems of such plants. Morpholine decomposes reasonably slowly in the absence of oxygen at the high temperatures and pressures in these steam systems.

Neopentyl glycol (IUPAC name: 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diol) is an organic chemical compound. It is used in the synthesis of polyesters, paints, lubricants, and plasticizers. When used in the manufacture of polyesters, it enhances the stability of the product towards heat, light, and water. By esterification reaction with fatty or carboxylic acids, synthetic lubricating esters with reduced potential for oxidation or hydrolysis, compared to natural esters, can be produced.

Reactions[edit]

Neopentyl glycol is synthesized industrially by the aldol reaction of formaldehyde and isobutyraldehyde. This creates the intermediate hydroxypivaldehyde, which can be converted to neopentyl glycol by either a Cannizzaro reaction with excess formaldehyde, or by hydrogenation using palladium on carbon.^[2]

Owing to its tendency to form cyclic derivatives (see Thorpe-Ingold Effect), it is used as a protecting group for ketones, for example in gestodene synthesis. Similarly it gives boronic acid esters, which can be useful in the cross coupling reactions.^[3][4]

A condensation reaction of neopentyl glycol with 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol gives CGP-7930.

Neopentyl glycol is a precursor to Neopentyl glycol diglycidyl ether. The sequence begins with alkylation with epichlorohydrin using a Lewis acid catalyst. Dehydrochlorination of the resulting halohydrin with sodium hydroxide affords the desired ether.^[5]
